Help Remove the Invasive Weed Hydrilla
The Indian Lake Hydrilla Response Coalition, a Rhode Island non-profit organization formed in the fall of 2023, to fight the hydrilla that was discovered in Indian Lake in September 2023. In April of 2024 we received a letter from the IRS confirming that we have 501(c)(3) status.
Our organization consists of members representing the families in nearly 300 homes around the lake including every homeowner’s association, the fire district, and homeowners who are not a part of an association.
DEM biologists have been working with the ILHRC since early September 2023. Approximately 40 members were later taught how to perform a lake survey, which was needed to determine how to treat the hydrilla. Indian Lake has the most extensive invasion of hydrilla in Rhode Island.
Hydrilla is understood to be the worst invasive aquatic plant since if left untreated it will literally cover the lake rendering it un-swimmable and un-boatable, in addition the hydrilla will kill everything in the lake including the herring that spawn here.
